Thursday 21st of June 45 YoungShippers met in SANDS’ (formerly Steenstrup & Stordrange)
new offices at Skansekaia to celebrate the beginning of summer. Not much summer weather
that day, though, but it didn’t matter as the offices had a beautiful view over both Brosundet
and the ocean. Hopefully, the participants would also get the chance to see the sunset.
Before the party started SANDS’ partner and associate – Geir Frøholm and Magnus Hurlen,
respectively – held a presentation about negotiations. Here the participants learned
different ways to solve disputes and how to carry out a successful negotiation. Advices were
given and one of them was the well-known BATNA – Best Alternative To a Negotiated
However, the YoungShippers were not only there to take notes, but also to practice their
new negotiation skills. A fictional charter boat needed to be sold and SANDS saw it necessary
to divide the attendees into groups, each consisting of three persons. Then two groups
where put against each other to sell/buy the vessel. Their objectives where distributed on
forehand and only the group itself knew the price/outcome they were going to aim for.
While doing it the lawyers from SANDS checked if the groups managed to follow up the
advices given in the presentation and gave points based on that. In the end the winning
group was announced. If it was deserved had to be negotiated on. And so, the summer party
began with much laughter and fun stories from the negotiation rooms.
And in the end, the sunset came with beautiful views! What a season it has been for
YoungShip Møre so far.
