The future of shipping: Maritime Innovation Masterclass

When fantasizing about the future, the majority of people with a willpower to change the world is young and highly educated and in the spring of their lives. This was exactly the dynamic last Wednesday 26 April 2017 during the Masterclass at Erasmus university Rotterdam, when the Maritime Economics and Logistics-faculty organized a masterclass together with YoungShip Rotterdam with a focus on the impact of digital innovations on the shipping industry. A platform was given to three already successful different start-ups that discussed their view on the innovation theme: Digitization in the Shipping Industry.

Vulnerability of world trade: ‘It’s about the first man moving. Not the last man standing’.

What a great maritime week this was, again! On the second day of the Maritime Week, YoungShip Rotterdam and the STC Group had the pleasure of having high level speakers at the second joint masterclass last 1 November. Over 75 attendants listened to representatives of the Port of Rotterdam Authority –(Jan Gardeitchik), the Royal Dutch Navy (Deputy Commander Naval Forces – Rob Kramer) and Royal Vopak Netherlands (President Jan Bert Schutrops). The main goal of the masterclass was to discuss factors that influence stable and free world trade. A relevant topic because of the recent bankruptcies in the maritime industry and rising geopolitical tensions between global superpowers.

Damen Excellerate: Costs down, quality up!

Last Friday, September 30th, YoungShip Rotterdam was invited by Damen Shipyards Gorinchem to learn more about the company and their view on supply chain management in shipbuilding. The 34 YoungShip members were welcomed by the Head of Communications, Sylvia Boer, who introduced the ‘Damen World’. Next, Excellerate Program Manager Koen Burgers, explained in depth how Damen uses excellent supply chain management to accelerate lead time, bring down costs and improve quality focussed on customer wishes.

Energized atmosphere at workshop: "Shipping; is it really that traditional?"

The first YoungShip-MEL combined workshop: "Shipping; is it really that traditional?" took place last Friday in a lively room of the Q building at Erasmus University, Rotterdam. During the event Alain Grotenhuis of Blue Ocean Brokers and Constantine Komodromos of Vesselbot explained to the attendees how their efforts have managed to stir the waters and bring a fresh breeze of innovation in a rather traditional industry. The energized atmosphere, the motivating speakers and of course the crowd of YoungShippers, MEL students and alumni led to a very successful workshop.
