#metoo

YoungShip Gothenburg supports the view of YoungShip International in a zero-tolerance policy against any abuse of power and sexual harassment that often targets women (but also men).

Dear YoungShip members,

I doubt anyone has missed the #metoo movement during the past month. Abuse of power and sexual harassment does not only happen in the Hollywood movie industry, but it happens in all industries including the shipping industry.

Shipping women in Sweden started a closed Facebook group #lättaankar with now over 1000 members, of whom many have shared their horrifying stories of sexual harassment, abuse of power by senior officers and even rape onboard ships. Some of the women chose to continue their career on the seas, whilst many chose to leave an industry where their safety could not be guaranteed and where they did not feel they had equal chances of a successful career as their male peers.

YoungShip Gothenburg supports the view of YoungShip International in a zero-tolerance policy against any abuse of power and sexual harassment that often targets women (but also men).

For more interesting reading on the topic, read the article by Birgit Liodden director of NorShipping and founder of YoungShip International.

The Swedish Shipowners´Association and WISTA are officially supporting the #lättaankar initiative, and we hope that more shipping organisations and companies follow suit.

What can YOU do? Support your friends and colleagues if they find themselves being abused or harassed, and stand up for those who might feel that they cannot. Remember that a harasser thrives in secrecy, do not help them by keeping their secret!

Yours truly,
