"The New Maritime World – Evolving Through Rough Seas” was the theme of the ShipCon 2017 and was hosted by the YoungShip Bergen branch.
Heavyweight speakers from Odfjell SE, DNB, Wikborg Rein, DNV GL, EnviroNor, NHC, Wilhelmsen, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), GC Rieber AS, Stiftelsen Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl, and many more shared industry knowledge. Social events for the around 80 delegates included a boat trip down Askøy at Framo’s flagship offices for dinner and the banquet dinner on Friday at Grieg headquarters in downtown Bergen.
We kicked off the first day with Sturla Henriksen CEO, Norwegian Shipowners' Association, who said: “To contribute to less emissions means that we are adding a greater meaning and great maritime potential to our industry”.
Stig Tenold Professor, NHH - Norwegian School of Economics gave us a short history of shipping followed by Kristian Mørch CEO, Odfjell SE who openly described how the management went high on the pitch on the goal to only use 12 months saving huge sums. He also talked about the past, the future and the long term strategy to growth.
Peter Behncke Global Head of Investment Banking, DNB Markets and Øyvind Axe Partner, Wikborg Rein Advokatfirma AS and Fredrik Gabrielsen Partner & Leader of PwC Shipping Bergen shared their insights into the challenges in a volatile market and we learned that two companies together are more valuable than two separate companies. We were presented with the latest most remarkable examples of acquisition in the market.
The last but not least of the first day was closed by two energetic speakers from NHC and Marine benefits who gave us an insight in the marine insurance world. Valuable resources are brought together to help Owners handle contingency situations and that “people” is the key word when covering personal insurance and taking care of seafarers both onboard as well as on –shore.
In the evening Framo delighted us with a short but sweet presentation of the history of FRAMO the world leader in pumping systems for the marine industry for more than half a century. Our hosts entertained us throughout the entire evening and made sure that this will be an unforgettable one!
The second day was opened by Haakon Steinar Vatle General Manager, Stiftelsen Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl who in his "mariner" style made us sing all together, making sure we have a bite of what it means to sail with Statsraad Lehmkuhl.
Paul-Christian Rieber CEO, GC Rieber AS together with Irene Basili CEO, Shearwater spoke of how Brigitte Bardot had triggered GC Rieber's control of shipping operations against offshore and seismic. The French actor is also a well-known animal welfare activist and promoted campaigns against seal hunting. The campaigns against the seal hunt went well beyond the business of the GC Rieber Group in Bergen. "We had to shut down our factories, which triggered our shipping activity. We had to convert the knowledge we had in shipping towards new segments" said Paul Christian Rieber in GC Rieber.
Other inspiring talks were given further by Olav Akselsen Director General, the Norwegian Maritime Authority, Sigmund Larsen CEO, EnviroNor who presented us with optimism the revolutionary method of transforming wastewater into drinking water straight from specially designed clean-tanker ships. Further Sasan Mameghani CEO of Maindeck, Espen Gjerde Senior Vice President, Ship Finance International Ltd, the one and only Ingar Skaug former CEO, Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Christos Chryssakis Principal Researcher, Øystein Engelhardtsen Senior Researcher, DNV GL. And finally Christian Svane Mellbye Senior Consultant, Menon Economics closed the last day of ShipCon 2017.
In the afternoon, YoungShip International presented its Young Corporation Award to Maersk Line, Norway.
On the closing night, the Banquet dinner was held at Grieg headquarters in downtown Bergen where we were entertained with magicians, the Shanty Master`s choir, delicious food, disco and not the least dancing.
