On November 5th, YoungShip Bergen and Bergen Shipowners' Association hosted our annual joint event, this year themed around the tensions in the Persian Gulf, which culminated in attacks on several vessels in the Hormuz strait earlier this year.
The programme for the evening was led by TV 2 journalist long-time reporter on foreign affairs, Bent Skjærstad, before Kjetil Selvik of the Norwegian Instute of International Affairs gave an overview on the underlying causes of the tension in the Persian Gulf, and in particular the relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Asked whether or not he believes the tensions may again rise to such levels as in spring, Selvik argued how that remains a possibility, and said that he sees no immediate solution to the conflict.
Following Selvik, Rune Henriksen and Anders Dahl of Norwegian Hull Club gave an introduction to war risk insurance and the Club's emergency response functions, before Hans Solberg of Hansa Tankers shared from his experience with operating ships in unsafe waters.
The lectures culminated in a Q&A session during which the audience asked questions ranging from the implications of the name 'Iran' vs. 'Persia' to various particulars of insurance coverage, before the participants discussed both international and local affairs over dinner and refreshments.
We already look forward to the next event, and hope to see your there.
